Kraken Review 2026
14 Years, Zero Hacks, Low Fees (8.5/10)

The longest hack-free record in the industry. Lower fees than Coinbase. Lightning Network. And proof they actually hold your coins.

Bitcoin.diy Editorial
·March 26, 2026

Kraken launched in September 2011. It has never been hacked. In an industry where billion-dollar collapses happen every few years, that 14-year clean record is not just impressive. It is the single most important thing you should know about this exchange.

But security alone does not make a good exchange. So here is the rest: Kraken Pro charges 0.26% taker fees, beating Coinbase Advanced Trade at 0.40%. It supports Lightning Network deposits and withdrawals. It publishes quarterly proof of reserves so you can verify they actually hold your coins. And for EU and UK buyers, SEPA deposits are free with 1 to 2 day settlement.

We have used Kraken across Instant Buy, Kraken Pro, and Lightning withdrawals. This review covers the fees you need to avoid, the security record in full detail, and exactly how to buy Bitcoin on Kraken correctly.

How Has Kraken Stayed Hack-Free for 14 Years?

Jesse Powell founded Kraken in September 2011, just months after watching Mt. Gox struggle with its first major security incident. He built Kraken knowing what the stakes were. Fourteen years later, Kraken has never lost user funds to a hack.

ExchangeYearLossesWhat Happened
Mt. Gox2014$460MHot wallet breach, 850,000 BTC stolen
Bitfinex2016$72MMulti-sig vulnerability, 120,000 BTC stolen
FTX2022$8B+Fraud, customer funds misappropriated
Kraken2011-present$0Never hacked. Never lost user funds.

How does Kraken maintain this record? Several layers. 95% of customer assets sit in cold storage with no internet connection. Kraken runs annual third-party security audits and maintains a bug bounty program that pays researchers to find vulnerabilities before attackers do. Two-factor authentication supports YubiKey hardware tokens. Users can configure an IP allowlist that blocks logins from unrecognized addresses.

The global settings lock is worth calling out. You can activate a 48-hour delay on any account changes: new withdrawal addresses, 2FA modifications, API key creation. That window gives you time to catch unauthorized changes before they take effect. It is a simple feature that dramatically reduces the damage from a compromised password.

No exchange is hack-proof. But Kraken has done everything right for 14 years. That is not luck.

Kraken also runs an OTC desk for large buyers and offers staking for non-US users. For this review, we care about one thing: is it a safe and affordable place to buy Bitcoin? The answer is yes.

What Are the Real Kraken Fees?

Kraken has the same hidden fee trap as Coinbase: an easy-to-find Instant Buy button with high fees, and a pro interface with low fees that most new users never find. Always use Kraken Pro. Here is the full comparison:

MethodFee$500 Buy Cost$12K/Year DCA
Instant Buy0.9% to 1.5%$4.50 to $7.50$108 to $180
Kraken Pro (Taker)0.26%$1.30$31.20
Kraken Pro (Maker)0.16%$0.80$19.20
SEPA Deposit (EUR)FreeFreeFree
ACH Deposit (USD)FreeFreeFree
Wire Transfer$5 flat$5varies
BTC On-Chain Withdrawal~0.00002 BTC~$1-2varies
BTC Lightning WithdrawalNear-zero routing fee~$0.01varies

The Instant Buy fee of 0.9% to 1.5% versus Kraken Pro at 0.26% is an 83% reduction. Same account, same funds, same Bitcoin. The only difference is which interface you use. Go to pro.kraken.com or select Kraken Pro in the mobile app. It takes 30 seconds to learn.

Fee tiers also drop as your 30-day trading volume grows. At $50,000/month, taker fees fall to 0.20% and maker fees to 0.12%. At $100,000/month, taker drops to 0.18%. Most retail DCA buyers never hit those thresholds, but it is good to know the fees only improve as volume scales.

Does Kraken Support Lightning Network?

Kraken was among the first major exchanges to add Lightning Network support, and they did it right. Both deposits and withdrawals work over Lightning. Most exchanges that claim Lightning support only let you deposit. Kraken lets you withdraw too, which is what matters.

Why does this matter? If you run a Lightning wallet (Phoenix, Breez, Wallet of Satoshi, or any self-custodial Lightning wallet), you can top it up from Kraken in seconds. No waiting for on-chain confirmations. No paying a high miner fee per transaction. Just request a Lightning invoice from your wallet, paste it into Kraken, and the sats arrive almost instantly.

The routing fee is near-zero. On a $100 withdrawal, we paid less than $0.01. Compare that to an on-chain withdrawal, which can cost $1 to $5 or more depending on mempool congestion. For small and medium amounts going to a Lightning wallet, nothing beats this.

A few caveats: Lightning on Kraken is not available in every country. Check your region before counting on it. And for large withdrawals going to cold storage, you still want on-chain. Use Lightning for small-to-medium amounts to mobile wallets; use on-chain for large transfers to a hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger.

How Does Kraken Prove Its Reserves?

Kraken publishes quarterly proof of reserves (PoR) using a Merkle tree audit structure. Here is what that means: Kraken takes a snapshot of all customer balances, builds a cryptographic tree from that data, and proves mathematically that the sum of all accounts matches (or is exceeded by) the actual assets held in Kraken wallets.

You can verify this yourself. Go to the PoR portal on Kraken, log in, and check that your own balance is included in the Merkle tree. You do not have to trust Kraken on this. You can verify cryptographically that your specific account was counted in the audit.

What PoR proves: That Kraken holds at least as much Bitcoin (and other assets) as customers claim. This rules out the FTX scenario where customer deposits were being used for other purposes without customers knowing.

What PoR does not prove: The absence of hidden liabilities or debts. An exchange could hold 100% of deposits and still owe money elsewhere. PoR is necessary but not enough for full financial transparency. Kraken pursuing a public listing would provide more complete disclosure if they follow through.

Timing matters here: Kraken had proof of reserves in place well before the FTX collapse in November 2022. Many exchanges rushed to adopt PoR after FTX imploded as a PR move. Kraken built it as an operational standard. That difference in culture is real.

Is Kraken Good for EU and UK Users?

If you are in Europe, Kraken is one of the best exchanges on the planet for buying Bitcoin. Free SEPA deposits with 1 to 2 day settlement, deep EUR/BTC liquidity, and full MiCA compliance make this a clear choice for most European buyers.

PlatformTrading FeeSEPA CostLightningMiCA
Kraken Pro0.26%Free✓ Yes✓ Yes
Coinbase Advanced Trade0.40%✓ Yes (fee applies)✗ No✓ Yes
Revolut (Premium)~1.5-2.5% spreadFree (banking)✗ No✓ Yes

That Revolut comparison is stark. A 1.5% to 2.5% spread versus Kraken Pro at 0.26% costs you roughly 6 to 10 times more per trade. Over a year of weekly $100 buys, the difference is around $60 to $100 in extra fees. That is real Bitcoin you are giving up for the convenience of staying in one app.

UK note: Kraken is FCA registered and continued operating through the UK's 2023 crackdown on crypto advertising. Bitcoin trading remained fully available throughout. The platform supports GBP deposits via Faster Payments (free) giving UK buyers flexible deposit options alongside EUR SEPA.

Pros and Cons

What Kraken Gets Right
  • 14-year hack-free record. Founded 2011. Never lost user funds to a breach
  • 0.26% Kraken Pro fees. Lower than Coinbase Advanced Trade at 0.40%
  • Lightning deposits and withdrawals. Both directions. Near-zero fees
  • Quarterly proof of reserves. Merkle tree audits you can verify yourself
  • Free SEPA for EU users. 1 to 2 day settlement. Deep EUR/BTC liquidity
  • YubiKey 2FA and IP allowlisting. Hardware security key support
Where It Falls Short
  • Instant Buy is a fee trap. 0.9% to 1.5% for new users who miss Kraken Pro
  • Not Bitcoin-only. Over 200 coins listed. Swan is the BTC-only alternative
  • No auto-withdrawal to cold storage. Manual withdrawals every time
  • US staking removed in 2023. SEC settlement, not relevant for BTC buyers
  • No Bitcoin IRA. US users needing retirement accounts should look at Swan

Kraken vs Coinbase vs Swan

Three exchanges, three different philosophies. Here is how they compare on what matters for Bitcoin buyers:

Kraken wins on fees, security record, and Lightning. Coinbase wins on beginner UX and NASDAQ credibility. Swan wins on Bitcoin-only focus, auto-withdrawal, and IRA support. Most experienced buyers end up using Kraken Pro as their primary exchange and a hardware wallet for storage.

Who Should Use Kraken?

Kraken fits some Bitcoin buyers perfectly and others not at all. Here is the honest breakdown:

Ideal for Kraken

  • Graduated from Coinbase. You bought your first Bitcoin on Coinbase, now you want better fees and a better security record. Kraken is the natural next step.
  • EU and UK buyers. Free SEPA, deep EUR liquidity, MiCA compliance. For regular European Bitcoin buyers, Kraken wins on fees and reliability.
  • Lightning users. If you run a Lightning wallet, Kraken's two-way Lightning support makes topping it up fast and cheap.
  • Security-conscious buyers. The 14-year hack-free record is not marketing. It is operational reality.
  • Regular buyers DCA-ing $100+/month. At 0.26% on Kraken Pro, fees are low enough that switching platforms purely for cost is hard to justify.

Not Ideal for Kraken

  • Bitcoin-only DCA with auto-withdrawal. If you want to buy and have Bitcoin automatically move to your hardware wallet, use Swan Bitcoin. Kraken requires manual withdrawals.
  • Total beginners needing hand-holding. Kraken Pro can feel overwhelming. The Instant Buy button is simple but costs 1.5%. Start with Coinbase if you need the easiest possible onboarding.
  • US users wanting a Bitcoin IRA. Kraken does not offer tax-advantaged retirement accounts for Bitcoin. Swan does.

The Verdict: 8.5 out of 10

The 14-year hack-free record alone justifies a high score. Kraken has operated since 2011 through Bitcoin's wildest price swings, multiple exchange collapses, and regulatory crackdowns in half a dozen countries, and never lost customer funds to a breach. That is not a selling point. That is a foundation.

Layer on 0.26% Kraken Pro fees, two-way Lightning Network support, quarterly proof of reserves, and free SEPA for European buyers, and you get an exchange that beats Coinbase on nearly every metric that matters for serious Bitcoin buyers. The only areas where Coinbase wins are beginner onboarding and NASDAQ-listed institutional credibility.

We are knocking 1.5 points off for three reasons: Kraken is not Bitcoin-only (200+ altcoins create noise), there is no auto-withdrawal to cold storage, and the Instant Buy fee trap catches new users who do not know to switch to Kraken Pro. These are fixable UX problems, not fundamental flaws.

How to use Kraken correctly: Use Kraken Pro from day one. Set up a global settings lock. Enable YubiKey 2FA if you have one. Withdraw regularly to a hardware wallet. If you are in the US and want automatic DCA to cold storage, pair Kraken with Swan Bitcoin for that specific feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has Kraken ever been hacked?

No. In over 14 years of operation since September 2011, Kraken has never been hacked in a way that resulted in loss of user funds. That record stands against Mt. Gox ($460M lost in 2014), Bitfinex ($72M in 2016), and FTX ($8B in 2022). Kraken maintains 95% cold storage, runs annual third-party security audits, and offers a bug bounty program. No exchange is invulnerable, but Kraken's track record is the longest clean run in the industry.

What is Kraken Pro?

Kraken Pro is the advanced trading interface available at pro.kraken.com. It uses the same account and funds as the regular Kraken app, but drops fees from 0.9-1.5% (Instant Buy) to 0.26% taker and 0.16% maker. You get order books, limit orders, and charting tools. There's no extra signup needed. If you're buying more than $100 of Bitcoin, always use Kraken Pro instead of Instant Buy.

Is Kraken good for EU users?

Kraken is one of the best exchanges for European buyers. SEPA deposits are free and settle in 1 to 2 business days. The EUR/BTC trading pair has deep liquidity. Kraken is MiCA-compliant and FCA-registered in the UK. Compare that to Revolut's 1.5-2.5% spread markup: Kraken Pro at 0.26% saves real money over time. If you're in the EU or UK and buying Bitcoin regularly, Kraken should be your first choice.

Does Kraken support Lightning Network?

Yes. Kraken supports both Lightning deposits and withdrawals. You can send Bitcoin from Kraken to any Lightning wallet almost instantly with near-zero routing fees. This makes Kraken great for topping up mobile Lightning wallets like Phoenix or Breez without waiting for on-chain confirmations. Not all countries have Lightning enabled on Kraken, so check your region. For large transfers to cold storage, on-chain is still preferred.

What is proof of reserves?

Proof of reserves (PoR) is a cryptographic audit that proves an exchange holds enough assets to cover all customer balances. Kraken uses a Merkle tree structure, publishing quarterly reports that users can independently verify through the PoR portal. It proves the reserves exist, though it does not fully prove the absence of hidden liabilities. Still, it's far more transparent than exchanges that publish nothing. Kraken pioneered this before the FTX collapse forced others to adopt it.

Kraken vs Coinbase: which is better?

It depends on what you need. Coinbase has better beginner UX and is NASDAQ-listed. Kraken has lower fees (0.26% vs 0.40%), a 14-year hack-free record, Lightning Network support, proof of reserves, and free SEPA for EU users. For someone who already knows the basics, Kraken is better on nearly every metric. For an absolute beginner making their first purchase, Coinbase is easier to start with. Read our full Coinbase review for a side-by-side breakdown.

Does Kraken have a Bitcoin IRA?

No. Kraken does not offer a Bitcoin IRA product. If you want to hold Bitcoin in a tax-advantaged retirement account, Swan Bitcoin offers IRA support with self-custody options. This is one of Kraken's gaps for US-based long-term holders who want retirement-account exposure to Bitcoin.

What was the SEC staking settlement?

In February 2023, Kraken settled with the SEC for $30 million over its US staking-as-a-service program. The SEC argued that Kraken's staking product was an unregistered securities offering. As part of the settlement, Kraken shut down its US staking service. This only affected staking for proof-of-stake tokens. Bitcoin trading, buying, and withdrawing were completely unaffected. Kraken continues to offer staking outside the US.

Is Kraken available in my country?

Kraken operates in most of Europe, the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and the US (with some state restrictions). It supports over 190 countries for basic access. Some features like staking, margin trading, and Lightning are region-dependent. Check kraken.com for the full country availability list. If you're in the EU, Kraken is one of the strongest options available.

How do I start on Kraken and avoid the Instant Buy fee trap?

Create your account, complete KYC verification, and deposit via ACH (US) or SEPA (EU). Once your funds arrive, go directly to pro.kraken.com or select "Kraken Pro" in the app. Do NOT use Instant Buy, which charges 0.9-1.5%. On Kraken Pro, place a market order (0.26% taker) or a limit order (0.16% maker). Same account, same funds, 83% lower fees. It takes 30 seconds to learn and saves you real money on every purchase.
